Removing Binder

Before working on a study of Ad Reindhardt’s later pieces you have to prepare well ahead of time.

One of the characteristics in his black paintings is the ultra matt look of the surface and there’s a few ways to get this, but here I’m mixing prime colors to Mars Black oils and adding mineral spirits. Once in these air tight jars I put them away, out of sunlight and any chance of knocking them around. Then I wait.

For a week.

It’s hard to say if it’ll pan out as there’s no apparent rules or guidelines other than the most basic of ideas.  For all I know at this point I’ll have 3 black paints with fairly high content of linseed oil still in them. With a little luck, Thursday I’ll know how it panned out with a brief test.
