Much to the chagrin of colleagues, I’ve been moving away from common street photography to work more in still life and abstraction.
While street life is certainly interesting at face value I’m finding it to be a bit of a beaten path. Despite it still being winter we’ve had a couple warm days on the balcony and the light is quite lovely and thus I’ve started workin in shadow play.
Here in this case I’ve hung old beaten garden tools from thin wires, letting the strong early afternoon light replay their shapes on the large concrete wall of my balcony. The texture of rusting metals and heavily worn wood handles creates a nice balance to the sharpness of the shadows. Even though this is purely a study, I can see a lot of accessible visuals in this work, though certainly not abstract. That will come later.
